Marine Anchor Windlass
A marine anchor windlass is a mechanical device used on boats and ships to raise and lower the anchor. It is typically located on the bow (front) of the vessel and is powered by an electric, hydraulic motor or diesel engine.
The anchor windlass consists of a gypsy, which is a rotating wheel with grooves that engage the links of the chain or the strands of the rope. The gypsy/wildcat allowing it to rotate and pull in or let out the anchor chain or rope. The anchor windlass is operated by a control switch or lever, usually located near the helm or on the deck. When the switch is activated, the motor powers the drum and the gypsy/wildcat, allowing the anchor to be raised or lowered.
Marine anchor windlasses come in various sizes and configurations to accommodate different types and sizes of vessels. They are an essential component of a boat’s anchoring system, providing a reliable and efficient way to handle the anchor and anchor ride.
